A thousand men
hung on air, legs
spread over Iraq,
come to sand, a
huff and roll and
parachute still filling, then
released.
I beat the bed to frenzy
Bowie's orange Low
in summer on
department store stereo
plastic with a tympani stick
stolen from school –
Don't you wonder
sometimes
'bout sound and vision –
This was a thin branch
I went out on.
I radio shack
alligatored stolen
car speakers to the thing
and shot the windows
on summer to sing.
(Now I'm old and I've
walked Berlin lifted
into concrete air
for Berlin is gone.)

Here is love
in the kernel
is new love
eat it green

I could die
and live: it is
all gloss and
a glass this
love scrawled

Only love is builded
on rebuilt upon
unleashed and
set upon
love

She's warm
she swarms
In the lobby of the
Iraqi Arms too many
guests for too few
rooms non-smoking

The dust whirled
soft on his skin
and the sun was
kind to his eyes.
The note in his vest
for his wife says
this is for you.
Lizards flicker,
tongues curled.
Look at this
boy's skull peeled
to rivulets.
This is the business.
Now stand
back in pecking order.
Her soft descending
tees and effs fashioned
old between fingers.
She curls in your fist
and gasps.

I cannot kill this two-cylindered buzz at the glass.
It wants out
as much as
I want out.
But this fucking fly banging along the glass.
Explain this
glass to
us and
we'll both
leave quietly.

A woman walks
into an air force
hanger and
beats the wings
of a fighter jet
with a hammer.

A woman stands
in front of an army
bulldozer and is
demolished.

Don't fuck with us.

You make what you can pick up
in the morning and walk with
all day.

What you need.

What you set down at night.

You make what you can carry
across the six mountain ranges,
and in spring the swollen river.

There are no memorials,
no markers but signs marking paths.

And into our black tents at night.

Let them be found
burned and floating
on secret still lakes.
Fill them with poisons
slow-bubbled hid
in their day's dinner.
Stun them and
shoot beams into the
backs of their eyes.
Lock them for
seventy years in
back-curling cages.
Slump them in chairs
while their telephones
ring unanswered.
Bait them and
trap them in lives.
Unpage them,
cut their wires,
strap them in,
bloat them to bursting.
Kill all heroes.

Reading Britannica

The chief crops are
barley, wheat, rice,
vegetables, corn
(maize), millet,

sugarcane, sugar beets,

oil
seeds,
fruit,
fodder,
tobacco,
and
cotton.

Yields vary
considerably from

year to year,

particularly in areas of
rain-fed agriculture.

Dates

are the most
important export

after oil.

The most
productive of
Iraq's estimated
25 million

date palms
grow west of the
Shatt al-'Arab.

Livestock products, notably
milk, meat, hides, and wool,
are also important.

A number of large
land-reclamation
projects have been
completed, particularly
in the central and
northwestern areas,

and many
more are
planned.

Together these

schemes

should double

the cultivated area.
The Dujaila agro-
industrial project
is the most

ambitious,
designed

to produce
more than
one-fifth
of Iraq's

crop and animal
products.

Other major reclamation
schemes are the
Abu Ghurayb
project, the
Al-Jazirah
project
near Mosul,
and the Kirkuk
project (renamed
Saddam Irrigation
Project).

To provide the
necessary
irrigation water,
several large
dams have been
constructed,
including the
Saddam dam
on the Tigris, the
Qadisiyah dam
on the Euphrates, and the
Bekme dam
on the Great Zab
in northeast Kurdistan.

The Wadi Ath-Tharthar project

takes water from the Tigris
for
transfer to the Euphrates
at
times of shortage.

The success of these
schemes depends on scientific
management of the soils
to prevent salinity and the

goodwill of the
upstream states

I want to die propped in a window chair,
Slurping warm whisky and fiddling with your gown.
When I'm done, take my glass and fix your hair,
Then roll me out: we'll stare the whole street down.
This place is no man's long for all the fuss,
For all the bodies buried in the park
And monuments stacked near the army base.
You still hear soldiers whistling in the dark
A song you used to know but cannot place,
Something about a girl so far from us.

The only ghosts
our mother saw
she said: a coffin
and its bearers
winding down
stone stairs in
Scottish fog one
city evening when
she was a girl.
She stood against
the wall to let
them pass.

She knew the place,
she lived there,
she was there, she
asked around;
no one had died;
there was no other
way through.

The stair is gone,
the close and gate
and street, each
stone is gone, and
when she fades,
just us.

These bricks are steeped in fear and hope condensed
From Januarys of old lungs,
Old songs translated into vulgar tongues
For something shadowing, immersed, immensed,

Invisible, but praised for what is done:
For rising bread, fermenting grapes,
For hops, and begged forgiveness for the apes
We are, and asked to grant another sun.
She has to crawl
inside herself
and burst
to be the nicest
insect of all.

[Did I steal that trick from VN? It feels too familiar to be my own.]

When my parents landed,
aliens on Elvis Island,
I was no baggage but
a souvenir, a likeness
got there, addressed,
stamped and inscribed
with brief love. Unsent.
A mix-up in delivery.

Chinese moon in the
window round and
looking back all night.
A tall pale of girl
shook out hair
coming in. We fumbled
through and found
ways to love her
ears first and then

What could be better than to be
a eunuch of the Forbidden City?
Thoroughly pure at the baths of
the ladies. My else on a high shelf
for the afterlife. Money for my mother.
And a puppy.
Monday, March 03, 2003
And some songs I'd
only change my
Lord to my baby.
I still chew the bone,
Big grown man crying.
Pepticon sure is good.
I love you baby.
Fifteen women fifteen
Children. My back's
Not good now. Roll.

What
A poetry blog. Yes, I know some of them are really bad. I put everything here, even the failures. I might cannibalize them later. Just skip the bad ones. Sounds nothing but mean. (And don't look for web design; this blog is just a big sheet of paper.)
